Duane Zeinstra, a long time competitor in the Wilroc Series, won his first main event in the opening night of the Coast Country Insurance and Quadra Building Supplies 2007 Salmon Classic. Zeinstra held off the hard charging Darren Yates for the final 28 laps of the caution filled main which saw only 6 of the 12 starters complete the race.
The evening started out tuff for our last feature winner, Kyle Vantreight, when he suffered engine problems in his #66 sprinter during hot laps. Despite a huge effort from his crew and others, Kyle was unable to repair the car. Kyle should be racing tonight with a little more time to complete repairs.
Qualifying action was exciting as usual as Guy Barrett captured quick time getting his ride into the 12's with a time of 12.889. Scott Aumen, also known as the "Tire Friar" was right on his heals with a 12.941. Trophy Dash action was fast and furious with 3 dashes to entertain the crowds. Randy Price, wrestling an ill handling car, managed the win in the C dash, while Zeinstra started his winning ways by capturing the B dash. Yates took the A dash after starting outside the front row in a 4 lap race that was over in less than a minute.
Two 6 car heat races were run with Randy Vincent getting the win in the B heat followed closely by Price. The A Heat saw some action starting with a false start that made for some near crashes as the cars were slowing to get back in line. On the re-start, Matt Mansell took off with the lead and never looked back. Aumen suffered a broken rear end on lap 3 which brought out the caution flag. As the cars were lining up for the restart, Jim McKay and Barrett got hooked together delaying the start of the race while safety crews un-hooked their rides. The rest of the race was fast paced as the rookie Ryan Floer followed Mansell over the line with Yates on his tail.
After a short delay, approved by the fans and drivers, to allow the #44 team to install a new rear end in his car, the 12 Sprint Cars roared to life for their 40 lap main. Zeinstra jumped into the lead from his pole position and had to contend with Mansell wanting the position. A caution on lap 9 fell for a spin by Rob Scott who had earlier graciously offered his spare rear end for the Aumen car, showing his great sportsmanship as a competitor. The restart again had Mansell pushing for the lead followed by Yates who was already in 3rd from his 6th starting position. Yates took over second place a few laps later with Mansell falling off the pace and eventually parking the car for the night with mechanical problems. The caution again flew when the#19 and #21 cars got together on the front stretch. This ended the night for these 2 drivers along with the #92 car that suffered a flat tire in an unrelated incident.
The exciting restart had Zeinstra on the point now with the quick cars of Yates, Aumen and Barrett lined up behind him. Showing his ability not to be intimidated, Zeinstra ran the perfect line, not giving any track position to the hard chargers. Aumen would again suffer mechanical woes before his night was out, coming to a halt at the end of the front stretch amongst sparks and smoke. This made for another exciting restart and the chance Yates needed to overcome the steady driving of Zeinstra, who was running what he referred to as his "little motor". Yates managed to get under Zeinstra on the back stretch, but opted to back out, choosing not to risk damaging two great cars on the first night of a double header. Zeinstra continued to run a flawless race to Victory, never giving Yates the opportunity to make his move.
Saturday night promises to be another great show as we will crown this years Coast Country Insurance and Quadra Building Supplies Salmon Classic Champion. A couple of extra teams are expected to be up tonight for the running of the John Bokma Memorial. John was an avid Sprint Car fan and friend of many of the drivers and crew, as well as the Saratoga flagman right up to his untimely passing a few years back. He also flaged the winged warriors at the now closed Cassidy Speedway.
