Darren Yates was not only the winner of tonights John Bokma Memorial, but was also the Coast Country Insurance and Quadra Building Supplies 2007 Salmon Classic over all points earner as well. Yates, who finished 2nd in last nights main event, was 2 points back of Guy Barrett heading into tonights feature. Yates needed to finish 2 spots ahead of Barrett to insure his victory.
The evenings program started with 15 cars qualifying. Kyle Vantreight was able to repair his ride and Dave Conway and Joe Dardengo also joined the field for the second night of the double header. Scott Aumen showed he had his mechanical woes behind him by setting fast time and Randy Price had worked out his gremlins and qualified second quick.
Three trophy dashes were run with the wins going to Duane Zeinstra, Joe Dardengo and Darren Yates. Heat races saw Zeinstra once again run away from the field followed by Mark Fisher and Rob Scott. The fast heat had a well know guest driver, Trevor Montgomery, behind the wheel of the #14 car. Matt Mansell was attending a family wedding and was unable to be here tonight. Trevor started on the front row and quickly took off from the field. An intense battle brewed behind him as the rest of the field was bunched up for most of the heat. In the end Yates worked his way up to second with Barrett on his rear getting third. This would set the stage for a very intense main event as the first 8 cars in the lineup would be the same as it was for the fast heat.
As expected, Montgomery shot out to a quick lead from his front row starting spot with Jeff Bird hot on his heels. Meanwhile Yates quickly worked his way to third with Vantreight showing he wanted the spot. He would soon have it, getting under Yates on the back stretch. Unfortunately for Bird his car fell off the pace with mechanical woes moving Vantreight and Yates into 2nd and 3rd respectively. Meanwhile a very intense battle was brewing behind them with the cars of Ryan Floer, Barrett, Aumen and Price. Montgomery and Vantreight battled for the lead for several laps. Yates, sitting in third, took the opportunity to take the lead when Montgomery got a little sideways coming on to the straight stretch. The three lead cars were 3 wide entering the front stretch with Yates coming out on top. The caution flew shortly after after contact between the cars of Barrett and Vantreight. The call from the flag stand was to put the 42 car of Barrett to the Back of the pack. This made for some of the wildest racing seen for a long time as Barrett picked off cars one at a time while trying to catch up to the leaders. With less than half of the 40 laps left in the main, the action was fast and furious all over the track. Vantreight was determined to get his position back from Yates but was unable to reel him in through the lapped traffic.
Meanwhile Price was using up the last of his tires, making a pass on Aumen for third. With the white flag out, Barrett made a daring move on Aumen and stole fourth away from this evenings fast qualifier. Despite Barrett's hard charge back to the front, he fell short of the positions he needed to land the Salmon Classic. The many fans who turned out for this evenings show were treated to some of the best driving the Island has seen for years. Next stop for these winged warriors will be at Race City Speedway in Calgary August 11th and 12th.
