After a rained out Friday night practice, the skies cleared and the sun came out for the running of the Reg Midgley trophy. Nine Wilroc Teams made the haul from Vancouver Island and were joined by Ray Campbell of Vernon making his first start in his Wilroc Sprinter. Campbell now owns the car driven by Randy Price for the last few years. The car count was boosted by the appearance of the local father and son team of Merv and Len Barcelo, Vince VanUlden from the Edmonton area and Richie Larson of Prince George, B.C.
Not everything was going well however as the #52 Scotty Roadster of Chris Root broke a drive line and will likely be out for the weekend. Richie Larson was experiencing fuel problems from the get go and was never able to work the bugs out. Larson is doubtful for Sundays show as well.
Qualifying was fast and furious as usual, with the rookie Ryan Floer capturing fast time followed by Scott Aumen, Guy Barrett and Darren Yates. Tonight's program was run with heat races followed by the dashes and then the 30 lap main.
B Heat race action saw Rob Scott run away with the win, while the A Heat was filled with all Wilroc Cars. The fans were on the edge of their seats as the 6 fastest qualifiers took the green flag. Price and Matt Mansell ran side by side for the lead for the first lap when contact between the 2 cars would force Mansell into the pits with bent steering components. The fast pace and ruff track would also take its toll on Ryan Floer, braking a front panhard bracket and Guy Barrett with suspension problems. Scott Aumen finished the race with a flat right rear. Randy Price took the win followed by Darren Yates.
A very happy Merv Barcelo was victorious in the B Dash and expressed his appreciation for the Wilroc teams that made the haul so that this race was possible. A dash action had Matt Mansell fill out the field as Barrett was still working on his car. Yates would take the lead early in the race and would hold on to win his 3rd Dash in row.
Eleven cars lined up for the 30 lap main event with Len Barcelo unable to make the start with mechanical grief. After a 4 wide salute to the screaming and cheering crowd of fans, Rob Scott led the field to the green flag. Price jumped out to the quick lead, starting from the outside pole. He was unchallenged for the first half of the race with most of the action taking place further back in the field. Mansell, Yates and Aumen were slicing and dicing trying to work their way up to Price. Once lapped traffic came in to play, it looked like there would be a battle for the lead. However, Price was hooked up and ran a flawless race picking off the cars one by one never allowing Mansell or Yates the opportunity to challenge. Yates was putting pressure on Mansell for 2nd with only a hand full of laps to go but was unable to close the deal. In a Main event run Flag to Flag in less than 10 minutes, these guys showed why Sprint Car racing is so popular.
Sundays show is an afternoon event and will hopefully have the car count boosted with some more local talent that were racing in Lethbridge tonight. |
